43 OUT OF 97 PEOPLE ARE ARRESTED IN MERSIN WHO WERE TORTURED UNDER POLICE CUSTODY

The Turkish government has arrested 43 out of 97 women, including high school and university students who were allegedly subject to torture and other forms of ill-treatment at the hands of a group of police officers from Mersin Police Department last week. It is reported that the arrestees are accused of organising a charity sale in benefit of families victimised by an ongoing purge by the Turkish government against the alleged members of the Hizmet movement. The detainees were not allowed to see their lawyers. Moreover, women detainees’ headscarves were stripped by the police, and they have been watched for 24 hours by male police officers.
