SERIOUSLY ILL TEACHER KEPT IN PRISON AND LEFT TO DIE

The Turkish government insists on keeping teacher Ömer Şamlı, who is one of the thousands of people arrested after July 15 controlled coup, in prison despite official health reports saying the state of his health renders him unfit to stay in jail. Şamlı’s health problems are said to be life-threatening. The main opposition party CHP’s İstanbul deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu made a press release about teacher Şamlı and called on authorities for his release. Tanrıkulu said: “There is no conviction. He is not a suicide bomber. He did not kill anyone or has a gun. Why can you not take another measure than arrest? Would it not be better if he is released pending trial, so he could get treatment and would not die?”
