There are debates about Facebook’s misuse of personal data. DW Türkçe analysed the scandal of 50 million Facebook users’ personal data being misused by a political consultancy firm. Cambridge Analytica (CA), hired by the Trump campaign in the 2016 US election, has been accused of taking the personal data unknown to users. Former Cambridge Analytica worker Christopher Wylie posted on his Facebook account about how Facebook breached the conditions of data protection. 28-year-old Wylie’s Facebook account has been suspended because of sharing secret information. The words of the chairman of the analyst firm Cambridge Analytica, which allegedly misused the personal data of 50 million Facebook users, confessed that the data was used in favour of Donald Trump during secret filming. While the British government announced its concerns about the incident, two US senators have called on Mr Zuckerberg to testify before Congress about how Facebook will protect users. The European Commission requested Facebook to clarify data protection of its European users. Facebook stocks drop after the scandal. Moreover, Britain’s House of Commons and European Parliament invited Mark Zuckerberg to the parliament to clarify that personal data of 500 million Europeans are not being used to manipulate democracy in front of their representatives.
