THE ECHR FINED TURKEY ON ALPAY AND ALTAN CASES

The European Court of Human Rights declared its decision regarding journalists Şahin Alpay and Mehmet Altan. The ECHR ruled that the right to liberty and security of Turkish journalists Şahin Alpay and Mehmet Altan have been violated. The court also held that Turkey was to pay both Alpay and Altan 21,500 euros for each as non-pecuniary damage. Mehmet Altan applied to ECHR on 12 January 2017, and Şahin Alpay applied on 28 February 2017. The ECHR reviewed both applications on 20 March. The judgments were made public on the court’s official website in English and French. Associate Professor Ergin Ergül who was replaced to Işıl Karakaş’s place in the court opposed the ruling. Following the ECHR’s ruling for Şahin Alpay last week, Turkey’s Constitutional Court ruled release of Alpay last weekend. On the other hand, Mehmet Altan was sentenced to a life sentence.
