ATİLLA ASKS JUDGE TO ‘TEMPER JUSTICE WITH MERCY’

Lawyers for Turkish banker Mehmet Hakan Atilla, who was convicted in New York federal court in January of violating US sanctions on Iran, asked a judge on Monday to “temper justice with mercy” and sentence him to “significantly below” the four to five years recommended by US sentencing guidelines. Prosecutors will also make their own recommendations for the banking executive, who will be sentenced on April 11. Atilla’s lawyers argued that the evidence showed his role was minor in an international monetary scheme. Atilla’s lawyers also detailed their contacts with Turkish officials upon the Judge Berman’s request. A detailed letter of Atilla’s contacts with Turkish Embassy and Turkish Consulate General in New York as well as Turkish officials’ contacts with Atilla while he was in prison are submitted to the court. The records show that Atilla’s lawyers contacted with Turkey’s then-Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ and officials from the ministry of justice.
