THE PROSECUTOR HAS DEMANDED LIFE SENTENCE FOR JOURNALISTS BECAUSE OF THEIR COLUMNS

An İstanbul prosecutor has demanded aggravated life sentences for 9 journalists in a case concerning 31 critical journalists and employees of Zaman daily 19 of whom were arrested as part of the post-coup witch hunt in Turkey under the emergency rule. According to the prosecutor’s legal opinion, the 9 prominent journalists including Mümtaz’er Türköne, Ali Bulaç and Şahin Alpay had “violated the constitution.” The prosecutor has demanded aggravated life sentences for Bulaç, Türköne and Alkan who have been in prison over 500 days as well as Alpay who was eventually only released when the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) stepped in.

The evidence in the case against these Zaman employees, and 20 others on trial in the same investigation on lesser charges, is made up of articles and opinion pieces published by the newspaper. Moreover, former Ankara bureau chief of daily Zaman Mustafa Ünal is accused because of not writing any criticism to the Hizmet Movement.  The court refused the defendants requests for release. The next trial will be on May 10 and 11 at Çağlayan courthouse.
