Disturbing the Peace Award goes to Aslı Erdoğan

The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation announced that the winner of the 2019 Disturbing the Peace Award is the Turkish author Aslı Erdogan. Among the candidates, there was also Ahmet Altan, a journalist in prison.

The award, which is given to draw attention to human rights, will be presented to Aslı Erdoğan at a ceremony held at the Bohemian National Hall in New York on 26 September.

The writer Aslı Erdoğan, who lives in Germany, is on trial without arrest for „membership in an armed terrorist organization“ in the case against the Özgür Gündem newspaper. Arrested in August 2016, Erdoğan was imprisoned for almost four and a half months.
